Ayurveda expert suggests herbs and spices to boost liver health | Health
The liver, the cone-shaped, reddish-brown organ in the body, performs an array of functions from helping with metabolism, digestion, detoxification, and storing essential nutrients. The body’s largest internal organ, the liver constantly filters and purifies the blood. It also creates vital hormones and enzymes, breaks down and preserves tired blood cells, and controls glucose storage. “This superlative organ is named Yakrit in Sanskrit. According to Ayurveda, besides the above functions, the liver is the abode of the Pitta entity and regulates the functioning of the optimum digestive fire, or Agni. Yakrit is also the site of formation Rakta Dhatu, or element of blood tissue,” says Dr. Archana Sukumaran, a well known Ayurvedic Physician (BAMS) from Kerala Ayurveda Ltd.
Dr. Archana says the liver needs to be detoxified often to improve its efficiency in maintaining balance in the body.
Here are some Ayurvedic remedies to naturally improve liver health:
Triphalah: Triphala is a combination of three gut-friendly herbs – Gooseberry or Amla, Chebulic Myrobalan or Haritaki, and Baheda or Bibhitaki. Mainly used to relieve constipation, Triphala also contributes to the proper functioning of the liver. Triphala tablets can be an excellent choice for liver health.
Turmeric: Turmeric, a golden and essential spice in any Indian cuisine, is also an excellent remedy for liver problems thanks to its anti-inflammatory action. It is also a powerful antioxidant that detoxifies liver cells. Boil a small piece of fresh turmeric root in a glass of water and drink it first thing in the morning to detoxify yourself.
Bhumyamalaki: Phyllanthus amarus is the medicine par excellence for all liver disorders, according to Ayurvedic classics. It is often used in cases of hepatomegaly and severe cirrhosis of the liver. Traditional Indian medicine uses this mystical herb to cure liver disorders at home. Regular consumption of this herb with proper guidance can be used as an effective method to protect the liver against other problems. Ayurvedic syrup such as Heposem is enriched with Bhumyamlaki.
Indian ginseng: Ashwagandha, as it is called in Sanskrit, is a powerful Ayurvedic herb that helps restore balance to the liver. It helps reduce the effect of stress and radiation on liver cells and thus prevent damage. It also helps stimulate the natural production of bile and related enzymes necessary for the optimal functioning of the digestive system. Garlic: The white bulb that flavors all our dishes is also a potential liver saver. The liver is the dumping ground for all waste circulating in the blood, and garlic bulb is the best remedy you can find in your kitchen that offers the best liver detoxification at the lowest cost. It has excellent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant action in the plant with chemicals like allicin, alliin, and ajoene, which often improve liver function and aid in this action.
