Matching global standards in liver transplantation by beating the Covid pandemic
120 liver transplants during Covid with 94% success
3 successful multiple organ transplants
10 Successful Pediatric Liver Transplants
VPS Lakeshore Hospital Kochi has been performing 120 Liver Transplants despite the challenges of the Covid period since March 2020. The Hospital Comprehensive Liver Care Institute team has achieved this goal with a success rate of 94%. Among the 120 transplants, 10 successful pediatric liver transplants and 3 multi-organ transplants were performed by the CLCI team. While the challenges posed by the pandemic have no precedents, the CLCI team provided the best results for this large number of patients, of which the youngest patient was a six-month-old baby and the oldest was 74 years old. , jumping a myriad of COVID-19 hurdles.
15 post Covid patients
One of the challenging parts of the pandemic period was performing liver transplants in patients who recovered from covid-19. But the CLCI team rose to this challenge with its expert team of specialists and targeted care. The team performed successful transplantation in 15 post-Covid patients, six donors who had recovered from Covid infection also underwent the transplant surgery safely.
“Transplantation in patients who have recently recovered from COVID-19 is indeed a challenge with a myriad of uncertainties, including diagnosis, underlying post-covid complications, systemic involvement of multiple organs, and possibilities of immunosuppression,” said Dr. Navneetan Subramaniam, Chief of Liver Anesthesia and Critical Care, VPS Lakeshore Hospital. “And uncertainty remains about the safety of performing such complex surgery on a recipient who has recently recovered from Covid-19. But our team handled this effectively and all recipients are now in good health,” said he added.
Minimal post-transplant complications
“In the success of a liver transplant, post-transplant care is very crucial,” said Dr. Abhishek Yadav, Director of Comprehensive Liver Care Institute, VPS Lakeshore. “Our team of experts ensure strict patient compliance with a specially formulated plan of care and as a result we have been able to minimize post-transplant complications. In fact, even immediately after surgery, post-transplant ventilation was not required in 60% of patients and biliary complications were observed in only 6% of patients. Minimal post-transplant complications have contributed to the high success rate and lower treatment costs. Liver Transplantation at VPS Lakeshore is performed at only a fraction of the cost compared to other centers around the world,” Dr. Abhishek added.
Zero donor complications
While maintaining such a high success rate, the CLCI team also ensured that no donor faced postoperative complications. There were donors over the age of 50 and those who have recovered from covid-19 and all have resumed their normal lives. The team ensured the quick recovery of the donors and they were discharged earlier, reducing the long hospital stay with targeted care.
“There are many misconceptions and fear of complications that can arise during surgery that prevent people from donating their organs. But the CLCI has proven that donors can lead normal lives without any complications. All of our donors are completely healthy,” said Dr. Abhishek Yadav. 120 of our life-saving donors are currently leading normal, healthy lives.
Living donor liver transplants
Contrary to worldwide statistics where the majority of liver transplants are cadaveric, 90% of transplants performed by our team are living donor transplants, which is a much more technically difficult surgery. Living donor transplants reduce the long wait for patients, which can lead to death, and is indeed a life-saving reality.
The CLCI team has experience in performing more than 1500 liver transplants maintaining the above-mentioned success rate so far. The hospital is among the best multi-organ transplant centers in the country and performed the first ever living donor liver transplant in Kerala in 2005.
