Signs that your liver health is deteriorating

The liver is one of the most important organs in the human body and is responsible for several vital functions. The largest gland in the body is responsible for producing bile. Bile juice helps break down food in the small intestine and absorbs fat and cholesterol from food.

Bile also breaks down food for digestion in the stomach. For this reason and several other vital functions performed by the liver, it is important to keep this organ healthy. Here are some habits that can damage your liver, NDTV reported:

  • Overconsumption of alcohol
  • Not drinking enough water
  • Smoking
  • Gain too much weight
  • Lack of physical exercise
  • Excess stress
  • Consuming too many pain relievers and soft drinks

If you find that you have any of the above habits or lifestyles, be sure to keep an eye out for these symptoms which may be indicating liver damage. If the health of the liver is ignored, it can lead to several diseases. Detecting any liver damage early can prevent the condition from getting worse.

Watch out for these signs and symptoms:

  • Skin and eyes tinged with yellow due to irregular bilirubin levels. When liver function is affected, there is an increase in the levels of bilirubin in our bloodstream. This yellowish-green fluid then pigments our skin giving it a yellow tint.
  • If the liver is badly damaged, it swells. It is then seen as swelling in our abdomen. It can also happen after an accident if there is internal damage to the liver. If you find abnormal swelling in your abdominal area, be sure to get it checked out immediately.
  • Extreme fatigue is yet another symptom. Liver patients usually suffer from a continuous feeling of weakness and are unable to perform daily tasks. Although fatigue is a symptom of a host of disorders, nonetheless be sure to get it checked out to rule out any health issues.
  • Due to the excessive production of bilirubin, urine also tends to become darker. But make sure it’s not the only symptom that makes you think you have a problem with your liver. Not drinking enough water also makes urine darker.
  • Nausea is also a common symptom of liver damage. You will continually find yourself nauseous and this will also cause your appetite to decrease. Nutritional deficiency then leads to weakness in the body.
